A system that acts as a safety net for all citizens of the country is called Social Security. Over and above retirement profits, those who are disabled, dependent for support upon someone who receives social security income, and those who are a widow, widower, or child of someone who has died are eligible for profits. But only if they meet the requirements.
When you work, you pay into the system. And this is the fundamental structure. You, your spouse, your children can receive monthly profits but after you've paid into the system - when you retire or become disabled.
With your social security number you can identify your social security account. All records of your account are maintained by the Social Security Administration. Moreover, it is based upon your social security number. As for earnings and profits, they are determined by the account records under your social security number.
When applying for a job, most people use a social security number. With this your employer is enabled to make contributions to your account. Financial institutions use your security number to report the interest that you earn on your accounts with them and by the Internal Revenue service as your account number with respect to your taxes. So, many other businesses and government agencies use your social security number for their records. Your records maintained by the Social Security Administration are confidential. Nobody can find it out without your written permission.
If you want to get a social security number, but you lost your social security card or want a replacement card, or need to change the name on your account, then you have to call or visit a social security office. Of course, you will deal with the Social Security Administration for a new social security card or upon birth of a child. In this case you will have to produce your birth certificate plus some other form of identification. If you want to get a replacement card, then you must provide satisfactory proof of identification. But you may want to change the name on your social security account as a result of a name change. This requires producing your marriage certificate, court order of divorce, or court order of name change. You have to know that originals or certified copies of documents must be produced - photocopies of documents are not acceptable.
The following are documents you will have to produce when applying for social security profits:
1. Your social security card. 2. Your birth certificate. 3. Marriage certificate. 4. If you are an employee or your most recent federal income tax return if you are self-employed, then you will have to have your recent W-2 form.
Extra documents may be required by the Social Security Administration. If so, be sure, they will let you know what you need to have. But if you do not have all of the required documents currently in your possession, in any case you have to go ahead and start the application process. Besides, the Social Security Administration can help you in getting the documents during the application process.
However, the preferred method is for the profits to be paid by direct deposit to a bank account. With direct deposit you can save a fantastic amount of paper and you are provided with a secure method to get your social security profit payments.
