Having hired an attorney for legal representation, anyone is entitled to frequent communication and status reports. This is because every client should know where the case is headed and get an update on the attorney's progress, or lack of it. Thus, considering hiring an attorney, or even already have one, you should think over the next. With this you will know what to expect from or initiate with your legal counselor.
1. Receiving status reports on case developments by the clients. You should discuss with your lawyer any action that he takes on your behalf. This has to be done in advance and afterward. Moreover, you need to know how the case is being processed, and the means your attorney is using to achieve client objectives. All clients need to know about are pleadings, hearings, pre-trials, and trial preparation, along with required due-dates. In case your attorney does not inform you of these things in a timely manner, then ask for periodic updates for keeping abreast of case developments.
2. Receiving a return call from your attorney. Of course, you will want to call your attorney if you have his or her telephone number. Many of them have capable secretaries or assistants that handle phone calls and relay messages from clients. Being in town and not involved in a major trial, your lawyer has to return your call within a day or two. But they may rarely call you. It means that your attorney is not doing a good job and you can get in touch with the head of the firm to explain your displeasure.
3. Finding the best ways for contacting. You should tell your attorney which method you prefer for contacting you, and provide one or more alternate means of contact in case the first should fail for some reason. It is important to ask your lawyer the same information. This will help you to be always in touch.
4. Using a message system. Try to set up a voice mail recorder on your home phone or use one at work or on your cell phone. You should ask your lawyer whether he or she is unavailable, and whether you can leave messages with the secretary or in a voice message box.
5. Expecting routine communication. If your attorney doesn't contact you for a month while he or she is managing an active case for you, then request monthly updates in writing or by phone. Remember that you both can do a better job of working for a positive outcome to your legal case. So, get in touch with your attorney if your lawyer does not contact you.
